Repair or replace your boiler? An honest guide
When a boiler plays up, the first question is almost always the same: is it worth repairing, or am I throwing good money after bad? Here is the honest framework our engineers use on the doorstep, with no pressure to buy a new boiler when a repair will do.
The 10-year, £600 rule of thumb
Most gas boilers are built to last 10 to 15 years. As a quick guide:
- Under 10 years old and the repair is under about £600 — repair almost always wins.
- Over 10 years old, or the repair quote is creeping towards the cost of a new boiler — replacement is usually the better value.
It is a rule of thumb, not a law. A five-year-old boiler with a one-off fault is worth fixing even if the part is dear. A 14-year-old boiler that has broken down twice this year rarely is.
Signs replacement is the smarter move
- It needs repairs more than once a year.
- It keeps losing pressure or making banging or gurgling noises.
- Parts are getting hard to source for the model.
- Your heating bills have crept up as efficiency has dropped.
- It is a non-condensing or G-rated boiler (a modern A-rated boiler is far cheaper to run).
If two or three of these ring true, it is worth pricing up a replacement. Our guide to the signs you need a new boiler goes into more detail, and you can see real numbers in our new boiler cost guide for Yorkshire.
When repair is the right call
A lot of “dead” boilers are not dead at all. Low pressure, a frozen condensate pipe, a stuck valve or a single failed sensor are all common, affordable fixes, often sorted in the first hour on site. Before you write a boiler off, it is worth a Gas Safe engineer actually diagnosing it. We do not charge a separate call-out fee, so a proper diagnosis costs you the first hour at £80, not a penny more in hidden fees.
How we keep it honest
When we come out, we give you both figures: what the repair costs, and what a replacement would cost, and we tell you which we would choose in your shoes. If you decide to replace, we apply the diagnosis fee against the price of the new install. We are Worcester Bosch and Vaillant accredited, so a new boiler comes with up to a 10-year warranty when it is registered and serviced.
Whether you need a quick fix or a fresh start, we cover all of West and North Yorkshire. Book a boiler repair in Leeds or Bradford, or get a fixed-price quote for a new boiler and we will assess the whole job before you spend anything.
